A weekend workshop covering cold climate design strategies for gardeners, homesteaders, and those who are interested in learning more about permaculture design will take place June 2-4, 2023 at Sage Mountain Center, an award-winning sustainable living center near Whitehall, Montana.
Permaculture design, a whole-systems approach to land management and sustainable living, has seen increased interest since the pandemic as individuals and communities look to grow more of their own food and bolster their local food systems.
Instructors Kareen Erbe from Broken Ground, Linda Welsh and Christopher Borton from Sage Mountain Center, and Tom Elpel from Green University will bring a vast amount of knowledge and experience to the weekend. Their combined expertise will make for a comprehensive introduction to permaculture concepts, cold climate gardening, botany, rainwater harvesting, creating food forests, soil-building, and alternative energy. The weekend includes class sessions, tours and a design practicum to give participants all of the tools they need to grow more of their own food, and design properties that capture water, improve soil, and produce healthy organic food.
“Whether you’re concerned about the state of the world, interested in going off-grid or just want to learn more about how to grow food, this is a great opportunity to get started on the right foot. I guarantee you that there is nothing more inspiring and motivating than spending a weekend learning about concrete strategies to make communities more resilient and food secure,” said Kareen Erbe, the lead instructor for the workshop.
The workshop starts on Friday, June 2 at 3pm and ends on Sunday, June 4 at 3pm and takes place at Sage Mountain Center near Whitehall, Montana. It costs $450 and includes indoor lodging at Sage Mountain Center and 3 meals. Participants can also camp onsite for a reduced rate of $375 which also includes 3 meals.
The weekend workshop will be followed by an optional three-day, hands-on experience implementing concepts related to the class at Tom Elpel’s homestead in Pony.
